The Hard Truth of Being a Social Change Agent

Nowadays, we have the right to speak up anywhere, including through digital platforms such as social media. Never before has it been so easy for individuals to share opinions, mobilise communities, and challenge the status quo with just a few clicks. Yet, this newfound connectivity comes with a hidden cost.

The boundary between online threats and offline reality has rapidly blurred. Consequently, for those on the front lines of social change, the internet is an indispensable tool for advocacy, but it has also become a significant vector for risk.

When we criticise a policy or simply comment as citizens, there are many who feel threatened. When we intend to raise public awareness, advocate for social change, and monitor the resolution of public issues, it often puts us in online attacks that are meant to silence or weaken our voices.

The Growing Data on Digital Repression

As a social change agent, there is often resistance to our actions, marked by attacks on digital platforms and in the real world. According to recent findings by SAFEnet (Southeast Asia Freedom of Expression Network), between July and September 2025, there was a surge in digital repression in Indonesia. This led to a significant increase in violations across all digital sectors, such as the right to internet access, freedom of expression, and the right to safety in the digital realm.

The threats that occurred during this period took the form of intimidation through text messages sent to activists or their families from unknown numbers. There were also difficulties in accessing social media platforms, such as live features that did not work properly.

Other threats included doxing, which is the act of revealing and disseminating someone’s personal information to the public without their consent. The information disseminated could include full names, home addresses, and so on, as a form of intimidation and threats that endangered the victims.

Not to mention hate speech that leads to cyberbullying on social media directed at activists. This phenomenon is often found in comments on the target’s social media or through tweet platforms.

Moving from Fear to Actionable Security

Change must continue, but it should not come at the cost of our collective security. We cannot let fear silence advocacy. Instead, we must equip ourselves with proper digital safety knowledge.

Whether you are a social advocate, journalist, NGO staff member, peacebuilder, or a concerned citizen, you need to know how to prevent attacks before they happen. This means going beyond the basics and understanding how to avoid geotagging, the necessity of strong, unique passwords with Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), the importance of regular software updates, and how to recognize phishing attempts designed to steal sensitive information.

Furthermore, we must know what to do if an attack occurs, from immediately locking down accounts and securing evidence to reporting to the correct authorities and seeking legal counsel.
