[SEAN-CSO 2026 WEBINAR] Building Better Counter-Narratives: Where Can AI Help?

What makes a counter-narrative effective? Explore what’s next in SEAN-CSO 2026’s Webinar 2 and the role AI may play.
[SEAN-CSO 2026 WEBINAR] Building Better Counter-Narratives: Where Can AI Help?

In the first webinar of the SEAN-CSO 2026 learning series, we looked at how AI is changing the landscape of violent extremism and P/CVE. From the way harmful content can be created and amplified to the opportunities AI brings for prevention, one point remained important: technology does not work in isolation. Human judgement, context, and responsible use still matter.

The next question is: how can we use AI to respond? One possible answer lies in counter-narratives.

Who are we speaking to?

A counter-narrative is not simply about creating a message to challenge another message. The same message can be received differently depending on who is listening and the context in which it is shared. This makes understanding the audience an important first step in developing a counter-narrative.

What works for one audience may not work for another. A message that encourages reflection in one context may create resistance in another. Sometimes, the better approach may not be to directly challenge a narrative, but to create space for people to consider another perspective.

So, what makes a counter-narrative effective?

AI enters the picture

AI is changing how we create and share information. For counter-narrative work, it can help practitioners develop ideas, refine messages, and adapt them for different audiences. But when the topic involves sensitive issues such as violent extremism, there is another question to consider: how much should we rely on AI?

AI can produce a message in seconds, but it does not automatically understand the context behind it. It may also generate inaccurate information or miss important cultural considerations. This is where human judgement remains important.

The challenge, then, is not simply learning how to use AI. It is learning where AI can help, where it falls short, and how we can use it responsibly.

What will we explore?

The second webinar, Developing Counter-Narratives with AI, will take us through four areas:

  • Narratives, Counter-Narratives & Target Audiences
How audience and context shape counter-narrative development.
  • Developing Effective Counter-Narratives
How counter-narratives can be adapted for different audiences.
  • AI for Counter-Narrative Development
How AI can support the development and refinement of counter-narratives.
  • Responsible AI for Counter-Narratives
The opportunities and risks of using AI in this work.
